Shame. Now that’s a word I’m familiar with. My guess is that you are too.

Shame: The painful feeling arising from the consciousness of something dishonorable, improper, ridiculous, etc., done by oneself or another. Ex- She was overcome with shame. (

My personal definition is this: the awful feeling that continuously let me know not that I did something wrong, but that I was something wrong. My being. A mistake.

Note the use of the past tense. See, I lived many years in the shadow of shame because of something that was done to me at a very young age. Something that I had entirely no control over, as no four-year old can control such things. Someone else’s sin. Someone else’s shame. With my entire being, I believed I was a mistake. I can’t pinpoint when it started. All I know is that I was aware that I was part of something very bad. As that awareness grew, so did my sense that I should never have been born.

Shame. It can eat a person alive from the inside out.

The thing is, you were created for a purpose. You are not a mistake. My Father assures me of this when he tells me, “I know the plans I have for you”, declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11.

That’s for you as much as it is for me.

“No one who hopes in you will ever be put to shame, but shame will come on those who are treacherous without cause. Show me your ways, Lord; teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long. ” Ps 25:3-5

Put your hope in the Lord and begin the process of seeing yourself the way your loving Father sees you.
